Operating primarily in five counties - Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Tana River, and Wajir - we focus on equipping and upskilling teachers, offering a blend of online and printed Standard Learning Kits to enhance access to quality education for nomadic children. Additionally, we assist refugee families in ensuring that their school-age children receive and maintain access to education.

Our flagship programs include Digital Learning Platforms (DLPs), Mobile Learning Apps (MLAs), Assessment Generators (DAGs), and Self-Learning Kits (SLKs), accessible via locally available technologies and in print across underserved communities. Our team comprises online teachers, special needs assistants, and counselors who collaborate both physically and remotely with schools, teachers, mobile learning centers, and community libraries to support this initiative. Over the past 36 months, CODE has supported 1,050 teachers from 40 schools, resulting in improved educational outcomes for over 30,000 formal and informal learners. Our goal is to enroll 100 schools and informal learning centers in this program by 2026.

Justification

  • The state of education in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) is dire, with 90% of the country's 2 million unschooled children residing in these regions.
  • Primary enrollment rates plummet to as low as 40% in numerous counties, starkly contrasting with the national average of 95%.
  • Key factors contributing to this crisis include limited access to education, substandard teaching quality, teacher shortages, and insufficient classroom resources.
  • Recent acts of violence, including terrorist attacks on schools, have directly and indirectly influenced educational institutions, students, and staff in ASALs, prompting teachers from other regions to avoid working in these areas.
  • Teacher-pupil ratios in ASALs fall below national standards, while completion rates and academic performance lag significantly behind national averages.
  • Many young individuals, having undergone the education system, find themselves disconnected from traditional livelihoods and lacking employable skills, rendering them susceptible to criminal activities and extremist influences.
  • Although mobile schools persist in some ASAL areas, many have ceased operations due to inadequate funding, supervision, and community support, stemming from the poor quality of education provided.
  • The persistent lack of investment in basic education in ASAL regions perpetuates the marginalization of communities, hindering their access to quality education.
  • Shortages of textbooks, instructional materials, classrooms, and teachers, coupled with insecurity, severely limit children's access to quality education.
  • In some schools, staff rooms serve multiple functions, further exacerbating resource constraints.
  • The implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) presents additional challenges to teachers, school communities, parent associations, and boards of management amidst these existing hardships.

CODE collaborates with government agencies, charities and the private sector to continuously and tirelessly innovate the right blend of a responsive, accessible and lasting digital online and offline teaching, print materials, learning and assessment solutions for learners from these marginalized and underserved communities. These are designed to empower them to acquire, demonstrate and articulate knowledge and skills that will support them, as life-long learners, to participate in and contribute to the global world.
